AutoDesk is acquiring Alias Rearch. AutoDesk acquiring Alias is to 3D what Adobe acquiring Macromedia is for 2D graphics and design. The combination of bloodbath and consolidation continues. (more…)

E-frontier Shade

Shade is a general 3D modeling and animation product from Japan. It has an ancient history as far as software goes, beginning life in 1986 and quickly dominating the Japanese 3D market. At the time, the Japanese desktop computer industry was dominated by the NEC-98 series, not exactly an IBM/AT clone but close enough; yet not close enough that it wasnt a problem developing for it. The NEC-98 series ruled Japan’s computer industry, and not a lot of foreign software ran on it without serious adaptation. No real foreign competition in the very early 3D market ever made it on the NEC-98. (more…)

Missing SIGGRAPH 2005

Jeremy Birn’s Summation on SIGGRAPH 2005 and what Ive been hearing from various partners and clients in the 3D industry lead me to believe I didnt miss much this year at the second LA show. I attended SIGGRAPH 2004 in LA last year, and the one in San Antonio, Texas (which was scorching hot! great planning SIGGRAPH!). From what Ive heard, it was all incremental upgrades. (more…)
